SARMs and testosterone have independently shown promise in combatting Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Building muscle has been shown to improve cognitive function in sufferers of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) — a precursor to Alzheimer’s Disease (AD).

SARMs (Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators), although developed to stave off, helping to reverse, muscle wastage such as Sarcopenia, could potential assist with muscle retention and growth in MCI patients.

Test subjects with MCI significantly improve cognitive function through weight training with progressive overload over a 6-month period, while cognitive exercises yielded no real impact.

Although more research would be required to determine whether SARMs could improve cognitive function, preliminary studies found:

Clinical utility of SARMs for neural disorders requires that they mimic androgen actions in brain. Although efficacy of SARMs for peripheral tissues such as muscle is well established, the extent to which SARMs exert protective androgen effects in brain is unclear. To begin addressing this issue, we evaluated the neuroprotective efficacy of the SARM RAD140 using in vitro and in vivo paradigms previously demonstrated to be androgen responsive.

RAD140 is a novel SARM with high affinity and specificity for AR, is orally available, and exhibits potent anabolic effects in rodents and nonhuman primates (36). We determined the effects of RAD140 against toxic insults in both primary neuron cultures and the rat kainate lesion, an animal model of hippocampal neuron loss relevant to neurodegenerative diseases (37), which has previously been established to respond to androgen neuroprotection (38). These data represent the first preclinical report investigating the neuroprotective actions of SARMs.

However, higher testosterone levels, muscle mass into late adulthood, along with regular exercise can all contribute towards higher cognitive function in your twilight years.

Prevention states:

Researchers have a few different theories: Some think it’s because strength training increases the blood flow to your brain, bringing more oxygen and nutrients to your nervous system. Others point to higher levels of the brain-boosting IGF-1. Or, it could be because resistance exercise increases your mood, and past research has shown us that for older adults, a better mood is linked with better cognitive performance.

Regardless, SARMs can be suppressive and taxing on the endocrine system. PCT aids such as Tamoxifen can lead to fogginess and depression in users.

The best thing you could do is to lift weights, eat whole foods, and enjoy a healthy lifestyle maximizing your natural endogenous production for as long as possible.
