While strongman and bodybuilding are both niche sports that deal with weightlifting, they are incredibly different in terms of training, purpose, industry, and diet. Yet there continues to be a lot of overlap between the two. To discuss the two sports, bodybuilding legend, Jay Cutler, and strongman icon, Brian Shaw, came together this week for an interview.

Winning the Olympia once is no easy feat, and Jay Culter managed to do it four times. He’s definitely one of the best bodybuilders in history, competing against other greats such as Ronnie Coleman. Likewise, Brian Shaw is a strongman giant, winning the title of World’s Strongest Man four times as well.

The two are not only experts on bodybuilding and strongman respectively, but they’re incredibly knowledgeable about all things related to competition and nutrition. The two’s expertise thus made for an amazing conversation, which was recorded and posted to Shaw’s Youtube channel.

Cutler and Shaw discussed a great deal, answering a lot of questions from fans. They ranged from what would Cutler do differently to beat Coleman to if Shaw could do well at bodybuilding to the pressure the two underwent while chasing those titles and being the best.

One of the most interesting things the fans asked was whether or not Cutler could handle Shaw’s daily diet. While bodybuilders are often stereotyped as nonstop eaters, Shaw’s strongman diet is really something else; at one point the champion athlete was eating 15,000 calories a day. Clearly, that’s no easy feat but Cutler said;

“One hundred percent. I heard what you eat. I thought it was a lot more than what I expected. I think we have a lot of similarities, like buying cows and eating how many eggs we eat, and whatnot. Listen, you definitely had a little more higher of a fat diet than I did, but I think our carbohydrates, your protein was a little more, but the body weight, if I weighed as much as you, being over 400, me, I was barely pushing over 300, I think that I would have the metabolism to eat that much.

I would be closer to that, than anything that you did in a nutrition aspect, because I ate more than probably 90% of the bodybuilders you read about today, or in the past.”

Collaboration between two industry’ greats like Cutler and Jay don’t come often so definitely check out the video if you want to learn more not only about nutrition but the sports of bodybuilding and strongman as a whole.
