DMAA is a stimulant that has received a ton of hype and mainstream controversy being the legendary Jack3d preworkout active ingredient.

According to the FDA, DMAA (1,3-dimethylamylamine) is an amphetamine derivative that has often been used as an active ingredient in various sports supplements including preworkouts, diet pills, etc.

Most notably, DMAA was a key ingredient in the infamous Jack3d preworkout supplement that garnered a ton of internet notoriety, perhaps becoming the most memed about preworkout in history.

Jack3d was known for its intense stimulant effects. But as times change, many lifters now seek preworkout formulas that aren’t as hard on the stimulants, seeking pump-maximizing alternatives that tap into the nitric oxide pathway to increase bloodflow to the muscles.

What is DMAA?

This stimulant is also known by:

  • 1,3-DMAA
  • 1,3-Dimethylamylamine
  • 1,3-Dimethylpentylamine
  • 2-Amino-4-methylhexane
  • 2-Hexanamine, 4-methyl- (9CI)
  • 4-Methyl-2-hexanamine
  • 4-Methyl-2-hexylamine
  • Dimethylamylamine
  • Geranamine
  • Methylhexanamine
  • Methylhexanenamine

Originally developed as a nasal decongestant, methylhexanamine or geranium extract as it also known as, was marketed as a naturally-occurring stimulant, although no existing evidence supports this claim.

Although once approved as a nasal decongestant, the FDA later deemed it to be an unsafe food additive — given its secondary usage as a sports supplement ingredient.

As an amphetamine derivative, DMAA is a stimulant that was often sold in conjunction with caffeine and other stimulants present in preworkouts.

It is a potent vasoconstrictor that could potentially lead to cardiovascular issues. Moreover, since many preworkouts contain powerful vasodilators such as L-Citrulline, possibly leading to health issues.

In 2012, the FDA begun taking legal action by issuing warning letters to various supplement companies whose products contained the ingredient.

Jack3d was perhaps the most famous brand whose product contained DMAA.

A year later, the FDA detained USPlabs — who made Jack3d — products which contained DMAA.

It is estimated that these products had a retail value of around $8M.
