Martins Licis Wins 2021 Rogue Invitational

As the 2019 World’s Strongest Man (WSM) winner, Martin Licis is clearly an astonishing strongman. Despite his credentials, it was unsure how well he would perform coming into the 2021 Rogue Invitational as he had not competed since the 2020 Arnold Strongman Classic back in March 2020 because he needed to recover from numerous injuries.

Furthermore the other athletes at this inaugural event were beyond impressive. Martins Licis went toe to toe with the 2021 WSM victor, Tom Stoltman, and the 2020 WSM winner, Oleksii Novikov. The legendary Brian Shaw was also competing but had to drop out. Yet, with all these odds stacked against him, Martins Licis still managed to come out on top. Here are the full rankings.

1.Martins Licis – 45 points

2. Tom Stoltman – 42 point

3. Oleksii Novikov – 34 points

4. Mateusz Kieliszkowski – 29.5 points

5. JF Caron – 28 points

6. Rob Kearney -26 points

7. Brian Shaw – 23 points

8. Luke Stoltman – 22 points

9. Mikhail Shivlyakov – 13.5 points

10. Jerry Pritchett – 12 points

The 2021 Rogue Invitational consisted of five events, beginning with the Elephant Bar Deadlift. Each athlete got to choose what weight to load onto the 9 foot bar, the order of lifter was thus determined by the highest weight. JF Caron ended up winning the event with an incredible 420kg (926lb) deadlift followed by Tom Stoltman with 413kg (911lb) then Martins Licis with 410kg (906lb).

The second event was CYR Bell Ladder, with athletes each lifting heavier dumbbells, 253, 274, 280, 290, and 300lb, overhead over a two and a half minute time frame. Oleksii Novikov finished all the weights in one minute and 5 seconds, clinching first. Martins Licis came in second by lifting the first three dumbbells in 37 seconds, while Mateusz Kieliszkowksi came in three by lifting those same three dumbbells in one minute.

The third event was the Wheel of Pain, an unusual feat requiring the competitors to spin a 20,000lb wheel as far as possible in a one minute time frame. Despite never attempting such a task, Tom Stoltman pushed the wheel 89 feet and three inches and won. Martin Licis came in a close second, clocking in his push at 85 feet and six inches.

The fourth event was the Yoke Carry and Overhead Log Lift Medley. Licis managed to maintain his lead over Tom Stoltman. The two placed second and third respectively, with Mateusz Kieliszkowksi coming in first.

The final event was of course a stone lift. While Atlas Stones are usually the strongman finisher, the Rogue Invitational forced contestants to lift 275, 300, 365, 400, and 420lb Inver Stones, which have  infamously uneven shape. Tom Stoltman’s speciality is stones but in a surprise upset Martins Licis managed to clinch first place in this event, winning the 2021 Rogue Invitational overall.

While the strongman event was certainly one of the best competitions at the 2021 Rogue Invitational, the event is still ongoing. Be sure to check out some of the other events while the competition is still on.
